Welcome to the ninth edition of The Call, the Interspecies Internet newsletter. This bimonthly update brings together key moments from our community and the wider field of interspecies communication, ethics, cognition, and more-than-human futures.
🌍 Santa Fe Institute – Spring Gathering
Interspecies: Decoding, Translation, and Interpretation
This three-day workshop was built on the April 2024 meeting, Imagining Criteria and Frameworks for Decoding Communication in Other Species, which explored what successful interspecies communication might look like and how it could be evaluated.
Supported by the Richard Lounsbery Foundation as part of wider field-building efforts surrounding a possible XPRIZE for animal translation, the earlier convening focused on establishing criteria for success.
With the XPRIZE design phase now funded, this year’s gathering turned toward a deeper question: what does “decoding” actually mean in practice?
Looking ahead, Interspecies Internet hopes to explore further the possibility of developing standards for scientific diplomacy across species, with conservation and coexistence at their core.
Stay tuned as a public event will take place on September 22 as part of the Santa Fe Institute’s 2026 Community Lecture Series at the Lensic (Santa Fe, NM). Proceedings from the meeting may also be published in collaboration with the Santa Fe Institute.
