Can Machines Learn How to Behave?

Blaise Agüera y Arcas is a VP and Fellow at Google Research, where he leads an organization working on both basic research and new products in AI. His focus is on augmentative, privacy-first, and collectively beneficial applications, including on-device ML for Android phones, wearables, and the Internet of Things. One of the team’s technical contributions is Federated Learning, an approach to training neural networks in a distributed setting that avoids sharing user data. In response to his recent article ‘Can Machines Learn How to Behave?’, we will explore through open discussion what these technologies can offer an Interspecies Internet.

About the Speaker

Blaise Agüera y Arcas is a VP and Fellow at Google, and Google’s CTO of Technology & Society. He leads an organization working on the foundations of AI and evolution. In his tenure at Google he has innovated on-device ML for Android and Pixel, and is the inventor of Federated Learning.

As a frequent public speaker, he has given multiple TED talks and keynoted NeurIPS. Agüera y Arcas has also authored numerous papers, essays, op eds, and book chapters, as well as several books: Ubi Sunt (Hat & Beard Editions, 2022), Who Are We Now? (Hat & Beard Editions, 2023), What Is Life? (The MIT Press, 2025), and What Is Intelligence? (forthcoming from The MIT Press).
